IN THE NEWS

Fast Fashion and the Rana Plaza disaster, Bangladesh.
On 24 April 2013, the collapse of the Rana Plazabuilding in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which housed five garment factories, killed at least 1,132 people and injured more than 2,500. Since the Rana Plaza disaster, no fewer than 109 accidents have occurred. Fast Fashion has a cost to both people and our planet.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Approximately 80% of the fashion we buy is made in these conditions. Fast Fashion is a disaster for women and the environment.

75 million people are making our clothes today. 80% is made by women who are only 18 – 24 years old and trapped in poverty and not being paid the living wage. Some fast fashion is made by children.

7/10 garments which are subsequently bought are worn once and are discarded to end up in the landfill. Non- sustainable/non-slow fashion pollutes the planet whilst being produced and also pollutes when it hits landfill post use and it has a high human cost.
